The type of the CNC machining center

vertical machining centre

The main shaft is connected down from the top of the machine, and the workpiece and the tool are moved on the three axes (X, Y and Z axes) to process the fixed workpiece from the top.

Because the processing is conducted from above, it is easy to check the cutting condition, and even heavy workpieces can be processed with high precision. It also has the advantage of having a smaller footprint than other types.

On the other hand, the cutting produced during the cutting process is difficult to discharge, which may damage the workpiece, so the cutting oil needs to be sprayed during processing.

Gantry-type machining center

This type of machining center features that the parts supporting the spindle look like a door and, like the vertical type, the spindle is connected from the top down.    Like the vertical type, it can be moved on three axes (X, Y and Z axes), but it can be moved over long distances in the X axis (depth) direction and can be used when machining large parts.

Horizontal processing center

The main axis of the horizontal machining center is installed along the horizontal direction and can control the four axes (X, Y, Z and B axes), along with the B axis for rotating the work table. The advantage is that the workpiece installed on the four sides can be processed at once. The horizontal orientation of B axis also facilitates debris and reduces the risk of damage to the workpiece surface.

On the other hand, because the workpiece is fixed from the side, the fixture may deform if the heavy material is installed, resulting in a decrease in the machining accuracy, so it is not suitable for processing heavy parts.

Finally, 5-Axis machining centers are some of the most advanced CNC machining centers available. These machines offer unparalleled precision and accuracy in a variety of complex machining operations, such as turbine blade production or aerospace components. With the ability to rotate the part in multiple axes, 5-Axis machining centers can produce parts with complex geometries, reduced cycle times, and increased accuracy.

Overall, CNC machining centers are a game-changer in the manufacturing industry. They offer unparalleled precision, speed, and versatility, making them a go-to solution for businesses worldwide. With a range of types to choose from, there is a CNC machining center to fit every application and production need.
